Getting Married In Jersey

Getting married in Jersey represents a spiritual bond of trust between two people, and what better place to consecrate your love than the beautiful Channel Islands?

Civil Marriages

To initiate a civil ceremony when getting married in Jersey, you will need to obtain a marriage license from the Superintendent Registrar.  As a resident, once you have decided on the date of your wedding, you must contact the Register office to secure a booking in the diary.

If you live outside of the island but still plan on getting married in Jersey, you must write to the Superintendent Registrar to inform him/her of exactly where and when you plan to be wed.  At this point, you will be required to pay a booking fee, whereupon you will receive a payment receipt and a “Notice of Marriage” which must be filled out and returned to the Register Office approximately one month before the date of marriage.  To be processed in time, this form must arrive at the Register Office at least ten days before the date of Marriage.  At least one of the parties must sign the form and accompany it with the full birth certificates of both parties.

All documents which are not in English or French must be coupled with an official translation of them into the English language.  If you have legally changed your name at any point leading up getting married in Jersey, you must attach sufficient documentation with your form that indicates as such.  You will receive back the originals of all submitted documents once they have been processed by the Register’s office.

Once your fee and form have been processed, the Superintendent Registrar will log the details into the Announcement of Marriage Book, and publicly display the names of both parties for at least seven days.  Once this time has passed, you may officially be issued a license.

The two parties getting married in Jersey must go to the Superintendent Registrar’s office at least three working says before the date of marriage to obtain their license and take care of any remaining formalities.  Once the license is issued, the marriage must take place in no more than fourteen days following.

Foreign Citizens Getting Married In Jersey

If one of both parties are not citizens of the United Kingdom, they must ensure that a Jersey marriage will be internationally recognized by their respective governments.

Peoples from outside of the European Economic Community who wish to wed a citizen of the United Kingdom must establish that they have the sufficient immigration clearance before entering Jersey.

Observing Foreign Divorces

Divorces which occur outside of the United Kingdom will only be recognized by the Jersey Government if at least one of the parties to be married was habitually resident in, or a citizen/national of the country in question at the time which the decree was issued.

Minors Wishing To Wed

Persons aged 15 and under are not allowed to be married in Jersey.  If you are between the ages of 16-18, your marriage will require written consent from both of your parents or legal guardian.  Parents or guardians resident in Jersey must give their consent in presence of the Superintendent Registrar.  Parents or guardians residing outside of Jersey must give their consent on a special form provided by the Register office.

Church Weddings

Getting married in Jersey requires all arrangements for Church weddings to be made through the Church of England.  Anglican weddings will be consecrated either by license of the Dean or by the Banns.

The Vicar of Rector will familiarize the couple with the procedures that must be followed.  Because you may be marrying outside of your parish, you may be required to ‘regularly’ attend public worship at the Church in question.

Being wed in a church of any other denomination besides Anglican will require the couple to see both the Minister or Priest of the church in addition to the Superintendent Registrar to obtain their marriage license.

Fees & Payment For Getting Married In Jersey

When notice is given in person, the cost of a civil marriage performed in the Register Office is £190, and £200 if you desire the ceremony to take place in a different location (which must be pre-approved by the Superintendent Registrar).  A wedding in a non-Anglican Church costs £130, on top of which you may be subject to additional charges on behalf of the Church in question.

If you choose to apply for your civil marriage license by post, the total charge will amount to either £270 (at Register Office), £280 (other pre-approved premises) or £210 (in non-Anglican Church).

All fees are payable by cheque, which should be made out in pounds sterling to “Treasurer Of The States”.
